Madeira Car Hire FAQ

Question 1

Do I need a credit card to hire a car in Madeira?

Accepted Answer

Most car rental suppliers in Madeira require a credit card for the security deposit. However, some suppliers accept debit cards when combined with full insurance packages that eliminate the excess. The card must be in the main driver's name. Check the specific payment requirements for your chosen supplier and vehicle before booking.

Question 2

Is a deposit required when renting a car in Madeira?

Accepted Answer

Most suppliers require a deposit (pre-authorisation) on your credit card during the rental period. The amount depends on the car category and insurance level — typically €300 to €2,000 with basic insurance. Full insurance packages may reduce or eliminate the deposit requirement entirely. The deposit is released after returning the car without damage.

Question 3

Can I book full insurance for my rental car?

Accepted Answer

Full insurance options (Super CDW, Zero Excess, Full Protection) may be available depending on the supplier and vehicle. These packages reduce your excess to zero or near-zero, meaning you pay nothing if the car is damaged. Compare insurance options through GooRentalCars to find packages that suit your needs and budget.

Question 4

Can I pick up my rental car at Madeira Airport?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several car rental suppliers operate at Funchal Airport (Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport). Most have desks in the arrivals hall or provide free shuttle services to nearby car parks. Airport pick-up is the most popular option as it allows you to start driving immediately after landing.

Question 5

Is driving in Madeira safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, driving in Madeira is generally safe. The main expressway (Via Rápida) is a modern dual carriageway with tunnels connecting major towns. Mountain roads to viewpoints are paved but narrower with steep gradients and tight turns. Drive at a comfortable pace, use lower gears on descents, and be prepared for occasional fog at altitude.

Question 6

What type of car is best for Madeira?

Accepted Answer

A compact or mid-size car with automatic transmission is ideal for most visitors. Automatic makes mountain driving much more comfortable. Ensure the car has at least 90-100 HP for hill climbing. SUVs offer more comfort but are not necessary — all main roads are paved. Choose based on your group size and luggage needs.

Question 7

Are automatic cars available for hire in Madeira?

Accepted Answer

Yes, automatic transmission cars are widely available from rental suppliers in Madeira. They are more expensive than manual cars but highly recommended for the island's mountain roads. Book in advance during peak season (April-October) as automatic cars are popular and may sell out.

Question 8

Is fuel included in the rental price?

Accepted Answer

Fuel is not included in the rental price. Most suppliers use a 'full-to-full' policy — you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full. Some use 'full-to-empty' where you pay for a full tank upfront and return it empty. Full-to-full is generally the fairest option. Check the fuel policy before booking.

Question 9

Can I cancel my car hire booking?

Accepted Answer

Cancellation policies depend on the supplier and booking conditions. Many options on GooRentalCars include free cancellation up to 24-48 hours before pick-up. Some offer free cancellation at any time. Always check the specific cancellation terms for your booking — they are clearly stated in the rental conditions.

Question 10

Are there hidden fees when hiring a car in Madeira?

Accepted Answer

Reputable suppliers do not have hidden fees, but additional costs may apply for: young driver surcharge (under 25), additional drivers, GPS rental, child seats, one-way drop-off, late returns, or fuel if not returned as agreed. All potential charges should be listed in the rental conditions — read them carefully before confirming.

Question 11

Can I add an additional driver to my rental?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most suppliers allow additional drivers for a daily fee (typically €5-15 per day). Some packages include one free additional driver. The additional driver must present their driving licence at pick-up and meet the same age and experience requirements as the main driver.

Question 12

What documents do I need to hire a car in Madeira?

Accepted Answer

You typically need: a valid driving licence held for at least 1 year, a passport or national ID card, a credit or debit card in the main driver's name, and your booking confirmation. Non-EU licence holders may need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Some suppliers have minimum age requirements (usually 21-25 years).
